Ribchester Trip

Last Friday, Hazel and Willow class visited the Roman museum at Ribchester. In the morning, we listened to an informative talk about the Romans and why they settled in Ribchester. We had the opportunity to try on some armour and look at Roman weapons. Then, we explored the museum and visited the site of a real Roman Granary.

We ate our lunch in the village park.

In the afternoon, we headed towards the remains of a Roman bath house. We had chance to walk around the bath house and learn about the different rooms in a bath house.

A fantastic day out!

Cultural Awareness Day

Today, in school, we had ‘Cultural Awareness Day’. We were joined by a special visitor, Prags.

We enjoyed an assembly about Hinduism. Prags talked about the Hindu religion, she explained the Hindu Gods and festivals.

This afternoon, Willow class had the opportunity to learn some Indian dancing with Prags. Below are some photos from our dance lesson.

Be Food Smart Morning

Today, in Willow Class, we have been learning all about what its mean to ‘Be Food Smart’.

We started our morning by making healthy fruit smoothies. We learnt lots about sugar, saturated fats and salt, and how they can affect our bodies. We discovered some healthy sugar swaps and used the ‘Be Food Smart’ app on the iPads, to scan bar codes of products. This helped us to learn about the sugar and salt content of different food. We were really surprised by how much sugar is in breakfast cereals, fruit juices and chocolate.

Willow’s Creative Arts Day at Lancaster University

Yesterday, Willow class spent the day at Lancaster University. We visited 3 workshops, held in different parts of the university. In the engineering department, we were able to design and make something using a 3D pen. We got to watch a 3D printer create a toy robot and then we met a real life robot! In the dance studio, we explored movement, using our bodies to create different types of ceramics. In the Jack Hylton room, we had the opportunity to make our own pots using clay. At the end of the day, we visited a gallery where our creations (made in school with Lancaster University) were on display.

Glorious Gladiators

Last Thursday, we were visited by a real life Gladiator! He came into school to tell us all about ‘Life as a Gladiator’ during the Roman times. He showed us his Gladiator weapons and explained about all the different types of Gladiator. We had chance to ask lots of questions and some of us even got to take part in a real Gladiator fight!

Passport to Europe

This half term we are learning about a region of Europe (Andalucia) and, linked to that,  in English we are studying ‘Gulliver’s Travels.’ We started the topic by travelling on a magic carpet to wherever we wanted, closing our eyes, listening to music, relaxing and visualising a special place that made us feel good.

When we came into the classroom for our first topic lesson we had to show our passports and have them stamped. An officer checked that the pictures of us in our passports matched what we looked like in real life.

There was a photograph of the region we were going to be studying on the whiteboard and we had to try to work out where it was.

January 2017

Happy New Year! It’s been great to be back at school this week having finally shaken off my lingering bug. I had a lovely catch-up chat with the class, sitting on cushions in the yurt, warmed by the log fire.

We’ve been busy in class as usual. Here we are in an English lesson sorting sentences out into noun phrases, verb phrases and prepositional phrases, then constructing sentences with them – all very high powered stuff!

Proud faces from Molly and Izzy when they’d done it.

In Maths we’ve been constructing our own nets to make prisms and pyramids with different shaped bases.

Blackpool Zoo

Willow Class had a wonderful time at Blackpool Zoo. We took part in a workshop where  we learned lots about evolution and adaptation. The best part was handling the snake and hissing cockroach!

Forest School

Willow Class have been having a great time learning in Forest School this term. The photos show a tiny sample of what we’ve been up to.
